Scholarship for South East Men's Knitting Retreat

I am very excited to announce the first ever SCHOLARSHIP for the First Ever South East Men’s Knitting Retreat!

This year, the South East Men’s Knitting Retreat will be held just outside of Greenville, SC in Cleveland at the Asbury Hills Retreat Center from November 11-13. We still have one spot left and have been saving it for this announcement. Our friends at XRX, Inc. have provided a special scholarship to the South East Men’s Knitting Retreat. This scholarship includes full retreat fees (room, board, etc…).

The recipient of the scholarship would be responsible for his own travel. You can nominate a friend, a family member or yourself. The nominee must be a man and over 21 years of age. Please confirm that your guy has agreed to be entered into the nomination process.

A sample nomination will be the first entry in the comments section below. I have also included my wife’s nomination which won me the first scholarship and allowed me to travel to Seattle for the Men’s Fall Knitting Retreat last year.
One scholarship recipient will be selected from all the nominations by a panel of Men’s Knitting Retreat coordinators. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS October 4, 2011. The winner will be officially announced on October 10, 2010.

I would like to nominate Russell Crowe for the XRX MFKR 2010 Scholarship. Russell has been an avid knitter all his life. He volunteers at a recreation center for disadvantaged children in the greater Los Angeles area where he teaches fiber crafts (knitting & crochet). I think he sets a great example for the children and shows that it’s all right for boys to knit. I know that he would love to attend this retreat but he doesn’t have the financial resources to do so.
Russell is Ravelry as HawtAussieKnitter and on Men Who Knit as BruceKnitter. His blog is at
Thank you for considering him!!!

And here is the nomination that won me my trip (Just to give you an idea):

I am nominating my husband, Russell “Rusty” Boyd for the XRX MFKR 2010 scholarship. Rusty was taught to crochet by his aunt when he was a child. He had an opportunity to perfect this craft when laid up in the hospital for three months after a serious car accident in 1995. Though he enjoys crocheting, it wasn’t until 2005 (when he took a knitting class with his wife before the birth of their son) that the knitting bug bit. It bit hard. We have had to convert our sun porch to the Knitting Knook to house all of the yarn stash (accumulated by Rusty and myself) and provide a place to begin teaching knitting classes. This past fall, Rusty started a Knit and Crochet group at our local library with great success. They are currently working on lap blankets for individuals who are wards of the state. He coordinated a field trip to the local yarn shop (25 minutes away) and is planning an excursion to the local alpaca farm in the fall.
Unlike myself (who knits for herself primarily), Rusty is constantly knitting to provide gifts for friends and family. He has had the privilege of taking a one more advanced knitting class learning to knit socks two-at-a-time. Because of our rural locale, the closest knitting shop that provides classes is nearly 1 1/2 hours away. Thus, Rusty has had to teach himself most of the knitting techniques. Please consider him for this scholarship in order for him to expand his knowledge of all things related to knitting and offer him an opportunity to interact with other MALE knitters.

Deepest regards,
Heather Boyd

I don't have anyone to nominate...but it's exciting that there are scholarships available! It's great to know that there are supportive people out there who want us, as male knitters, to be successful in our craft (and happy to boot!)
