The Coytown Panda

Gregory Patrick's picture

I live in the most interesting neighborhood of Orlando. Coytown, just north of downtown is a vibrant, young, energetic, and artistic few blocks of old concrete ranch style homes from the 70's. But, the coolest thing about Coytown is its Asian population. The community of Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese is so vibrant and strong that even Publix has signs out front written in Vietnamese. You have these amazing restaurants and shops, whole blocks where nothing is either spoken or written in English, and people mingling over coffee and sweet milk.
Pom Pom's Teahouse, Tasty Wok, Pho 88, Vihn's. Its not uncommon to hear any of these places in daily conversation.

As many of you know, my knits are a reflection of things around me, portraits in the life of a man who found solace in a set of bamboo knitting needles and unprocessed yarn. My knits are snapshots and observations of my life. I had to make a bear to commemorate this little section of Orlando we commonly call "Little Saigon."

Very, very cute!!! Pandas have always been a favorite of mine.

Sounds like you live in a great, diverse area. That's great!

I've eaten at Vihn's! It was wonderful! We have areas like that in Tampa as well, but none so large as Orlando.

Love the panda! And Asian neighborhoods; it's one of the things I most miss in Istanbul. I'm in New York right now, in Queens. The other day my friend and I walked into a big Asian market and just the characteristic smells of the place were like a time machine and I felt at home. Soy, fish, bacteria...(mostly good ones). :) After 10 days with the mom in Arkansas, I'll go on to Seattle, and I'm sure I'll be at a pho place before the sun sets!

MMMmmm... sounds nice. I once ate at a nice - but tiny - Thai food stall in Pike Street Market that my young cousin took me to. Great food and very reasonably priced.

Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.
