Howdy All!

Hey there everyone! Nice to meet you all! I'm a pretty novice knitter, but thoroughly addicted. I've been trolling the site for quite a while now, and thought I should sign up and say my hello's and pass on a humorous story. The wife and I picked up a "learn to knit" kit a while back as well as an extra set of needles thinking we would learn together. After sitting down for a while, I was well on my way to having a nice swatch, while the wife was still trying to cast on. I decided to let her catch up and went and checked Lion brand yarns website when the following conversation took place.

Me : "Hey, did you know that Vannah White is Lion brand yarns spokesperson?"
Wife : "*Garbled Explatives*"
Me : "You know, that lady from Wheel of Fortune"
Wife : "I'm about to go all vowels on this damn thing"

At which point she dropped the needles and picked up her crochet stuff. Needless to say, thats why I'm hanging out with you fellows as knitting companions instead of the wife. I'm just hoping to one day get her to try it again.

I do have a question,... I've seen a few threads on different knitting techniques, are there any links you folks might have to learning said techniques as well as the benefits and drawbacks to each?

Thanks in advance

Welcome Mike....Your wife sounds like a humorous person! She would be fun to be around.

Sites as far as stitches? I use this one if that is the case:

Welcome to Men Who Knit! I second the motion for, I haven't even picked up the beginner's knitting technique book I have since I found that site. That's my opinion at least, her teaching style is very clear and to the point.

For me....I need to see the stitches in action. I need visuals. Oh hell, I probably need therapy too!

Well I didn't want to say anything, but now that you mention it :D

Ah yes! That was exactly what I was looking for. I learned English, but have been hearing about continental and want to try it. Thanks!

Hi Mike,

Yes, I agree with Rob - your wife does sound fun! This is a great site. I hope you enjoy it.

For specific knitting techniques, don't forget YouTube. There are lots of knitting videos there - just search what you're looking for ("Casting on" for example) then choose which of the 3500 instructional videos you want to watch!

Welcome to the site!

Welcome, I always give one piece of advise to new knitters. Most of your question will be answered by two small books. " Mary Thomas's Knitting Book" they sell for less than $10 each and have the answer to the most basic questions.
Good luck in your new venture.

Welcome to our happy little group! As you careen across the many universes of knitting remember the Golden Universal Knitting Rule: If it works for you, it's the right way to do it.

Welcome, Mike!

I agree with the advice offered so far. I particularly like the site recommended by tucker303. You might also have a look at It's a video podcast that teaches the basics.

Have fun!

OK...I am glad this topic came up cause I like the other advice that I can use!
