100 Bowls of Compassion

Six years ago when I was working for Miriam's Kitchen, a breakfast and case management program for homeless adults in Washington DC, we developed a gala fund raising event based on a quote from Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist teacher: "Compassion is like the moon reflecting in one hundred bowls of water." This event, called 100 Bowls of Compassion, included bowls for silent auction and a live auction of high end things - trips to Mexico, France, etc. It was first held in the atrium of the World Bank but has grown so large that it's now held in the Building Museum here in Washington DC. Individual tickets go for $250. The event is almost entirely volunteer driven, all the way from the food prep to staffing the event the night of. Most of the bowls that we collect from artists are pottery or glass, but I'd LOVE to see some knitted or felted bowls this year from guys on this website! If you'd be interested in donating a handmade piece, drop me a line and I'll send you the details. I've attached a picture from the event last year.

Happy Monday!

Hi Jonathan. I'd love to participate. Send me details! I have found some bowl patterns online already, but if you or anyone else has a pattern to suggest, that would be great too.

I often do felting . . and have looked at doing felted bowls. When is the event, and what other details are available?

my partner, rick nahmias, is opening a photo exhibit and doing a book signing of "the Migrant Project" in d.c. it's an exhibit documenting the migrant farmers' lives with accompanying book. the book sale proceeds already go to support migrant workers, but i could probably get a signed copy for auction. when is the event?

you can check his website to see if it fits your event www.themigrantproject.com

I wouldn't mind doing a bowl for this. I just scrounged up a pattern online, and I have some unused soy-wool that's been begging to be worked up into something.

I'd love to do something - how much time do we have?

I would donate, would wire bowls work? or are you just looking for felted bowls? are there certain dimensions we should worry about? And last question, how much time do we have? Although I really wouldn't mind doing this instead of my finals...haha

I'd be interested, too.

Yes - details! Always good to have! The event is Thursday, May 8th, and they're hoping to collect the pieces by April 18th (but there is wiggle room!). I've responded to all the comments below with a private message, and if you haven't left a comment and would like to participate, send me a message with your email and I'll forward all the details on to you.

I'm really looking forward to having you guys participate!

Being in the fundraising business and always being appreciative of those who donate items to the charity events that I plan, you can count me in. I knit items for my own event auctions. So, send me the details and I'll work up something by then.

Count me in...I'll do something either knit, sewn, or woven.... (or maybe all 3...) I love the idea...
