My first FO

NoNewWitticisms's picture

Finished my Proof of Concept scarf tonight, my first real finished object. It's just a simple garter stitch scarf, but I'm proud. Plus I get to show it to my knitting group which meets tomorrow.

If I can ever find the cord to my digital camera, I'll show you what it looks like. Not that it's particularly impressive.

Congratulations...to me, finishing a knitted garment shows that you have the single-most important skill in knitting...persistence.

You'll be knitting Aran sweaters in no time.

Sometimes simple can be exquisite. Take a look at Jared's garter stick scarf at: http://brooklyntweed.blogspot.com/.

I agree with Joe. Creating (which includes finishing) is the important thing.

A lot of people take on way too ambitious a project for their first attempt - and get discouraged in next to no time. (Not to say that there are not people who can and do pick ambitious first projects and complete them with flying colours)

but there is also the benefit of chosing something simpler - which allows you to concentrate on basic techniques yet give the sense of accomplisment without the frustration.

whichever - congratulations on a first project and we expect to see many more. Maybe even some Ichida lace?

Thanks, of course, for the support. Considering my goal was to learn to knit by my birthday in 2009, I'm quite pleased, but it's clear I should have made the goal more challenging.

Suggestions for a new knitting-oriented goal, to be completed by mid-February next year?

well - there is still ribbing, lace, intarsia, fair isle, entrelac, etc to try and /or master...
mitering, short rows, modular knitting, illusion knitting. . .

I'm pretty sure my next project (yes, another scarf) is gonna be ribbed, so I don't think that's the one. Maybe I should gather a short list of projects/concepts, and let my goal be to master/complete them all.
