...new to "menwhoknit"...and to blogging!

G'Day all,

Thank you for letting me join this site...I'm hoping to learn heaps from you guys...I have been knitting for 25 year, but still only have pretty basic skills, so I'm dead keen to do better...

I'm also pretty new to blogging, so I hope that I dont "slip" to often, but over the next few weeks I might share on here some of my current projects with you...of course being "Down Under" winter is on the way for us Aussies and seeing as I'm a mad-as snowboarder I want to have several projects finshed soon

QueerJoe has already been a big help pointing me to his antique longjohns pattern, and I started them tonight...so here's hoping...

...more soon

Welcome to MWK! Looking forward to seeing your projects and your development as you knit on!

That's just like Joe- always directing guys to his longjohns. Welcome!

aussieknitterchris's picture

...I get the impression that he's famous for them...quite a lot to live up to...Thanks for the message mate...

...wildly knitting...always!

QueerJoe's picture

hah!...funny men. Truth be told, I've never knit a pair of longjohns...only the boxer-brief version.

It is quite a simple pattern, and mostly just boring K1, P1 ribbing and stockinette stitch, but when I was more youthful, it was nice to be able to fill them out pleasantly :)

Thomasknits's picture

Certainly you didn't get those biceps just from knitting?

aussieknitterchris's picture

Ha Ha Ha...no mate...believe it or not I can't even knit two handed ( my sweet Mum dropped me when I was born....more about that another time..)...luckily there are a few other things I do two-handed however.....thanks for the message!

...wildly knitting...always!

Thomasknits's picture

Wait, how do you knit one-handed?

Hi Chris,

Great to have you on MWK! I love having guys from other cultures and countries here. Both me and my partner had family who lived in Australia for a few years, but I've never been, so I look forward to hearing more from you!

Welcome to MWK! There are lots of helpful and encouraging guys on this site, so I'm sure you'll enjoy their input. Looking forward to seeing your work when you get a break from snow boarding.

The beauty of knitting is that EVERYTHING is just "the basic skills" - after that it is just practice, practice, practice and hope you read the directions correctly. But wow! can those few little basics be combined in so many ways.

MMario - I'm not divorced from reality - we're having a trial separation

Welcome Chris, glad to have you with us. Don't stress over slip ups on the site, we have all made them. It's kind of like you initiation to the MWK family. There is a wealth of information and support here. Truly a great group of guys.

I also echo MMario about basic skills. I always say "it's all just knits and purls".

Welcome: This is an awesome site. I've gotten tons of help here as well as tons of laughs.

Welcome to the site Chris. I agree with the other fellow. You didn't get those arms knitting. Mine are maybe 2/3 that size and I know how they're earned. I am intersted in knowing how to knit the boxer brief the other guy referred to. I was just in to see my dermatologist (great guy) yesterday and he told me that elastic waistbands on my underwear are eating my skin up. This may be off topic but any suggestions for non-elastic varieties other than knitting my own? Thanks!

Kevin...here's the pattern:

Welcome to MWK from Canada, I am sure you will enjoy the site very much, just as much as those of us admiring the biceps (blush). Do tell more about this one handed knitting. I agree with MMario, it is just knit and purl....it is what you do with those knit and purls lol.

Welcome. Lots of great guys here. Coming from an area where most male knitters are still hiding behind locked doors, I found it a great blessing to connect to an international community. Take care. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

Welcome to MWK Chris, it's a very useful, helpful and friendly site. Your biceps alone have caused quite a stir already;)

aussieknitterchris's picture

Thanks guys!

Just got up and saw all the fantastic messages...a whole herd of new mates - awesome...

re the biceps - thanks guys...I'm just a week back into some regular training after nearly 2 years off, so perhaps I will post another pic when they are back to "normal" - I dont know how I'm ever gonna post a picture of me in QueerJoe's underpants though ;-)!!

I haven't worked my way back through the whole blog list on here yet, so perhaps you already have done this - but perhaps you need a "menwhoknit" calendar? ;-0

I am looking forward to getting a lot of tips from you all to improve my skills

Cheers guys - Chris

Chris, let me aplogize for my comrads - I'm sure they didn't intend to make you feel like fresh meat, lol. These men are shameless but a lovely group indeed. Welcome to MWK, I can't wait to see some of your work.

aussieknitterchris's picture

Ha Ha Ha....no apologies necessary...what a great bunch of men...I alwayd knew that knitting helped define fellas of a certain "standard"...

I've had a colourful past (think bartender in studded leather G!! etc etc)but I hasten to add that I'm just a quiet "cricket on the hearth" kinda guy (LOL)

I'll be posting a couple of current projects on here shortly...I need som hepl with bears (Grr!)

Thanks for the message,

Welcome Chris! Great to see someone from Down Under! You'll enjoy the site and I'm sure you'll have fun. Does your shirt say "Blow Boy"?

aussieknitterchris's picture

Ha Ha,

Thanks for the message mate,

The tank says "Plow Boy" - I'm a frustrated city boy who would rather be on the back of a John Deere any day!!! ;-)

Hey Dave,

Crow-eater here - in Metro Adelaide (Glenelg in you know it)

Ballarat's a beautiful city...just a shame you don't pass through it now with the western highway diversion....although I'm getting a bit on these days to do the drive just for a weekend's fun in the 'big smoke'
