Wool Peddlers' Shawl

Pattern: Wool Peddlers' Shawl
Book: Folk Shawls
Yarn: Hand-dyed Superwash Merino w/ Nylon.
Needles: US7
Started 03/05/09
Finished 03/27/09

This was a second attempt for this shawl. Last time I got to the lace, screwed up and frogged it. I didn't like the way the other yarn color-pooled anyway!

Gorgeous, like a tropical butterfly- I wish it would fly through the monitor into my house!

Awesome shawl. I'm usually not a fan of variegated yarn, but this one is real pretty.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of variegated yarn either (although I have a ton of it in my stash). The first time i tried this shawl with a variegated yarn it color-pooled in a not very attractive manner. This yarn really didn't pool much at all. I have a green colorway that I'm making a second one with. Hoping it will do as well, I only wish the colors were as intense as the blue colorway.

I'm interested to know whether or not you made the shawl for your own use. Years ago I lived in Ecuador, and I remember some of the old men using small blankets as though they were shawls. Houses in the Andes Mountains are always cold and damp during the rainy season. As indoor temperatures become cooler in the interest of economy, I have been thinking that wraps for men is an attractive idea.

I don't think I'm secure enough in my masculinity to wear a shawl. My friends already nicknamed me Grandma, because I sit around drinking my Earl Grey tea and knit every moment that I'm not working or trolling the internet.
This shawl went to mom. All the ladies in her church keep telling her that she needs to let me know that she has friends that like knitted items too.

If you are smart you will not go there. "Church Ladies" are insatiable!

A truly gorgeous shawl. I am sure your mom appreciates it. The colour is wonderful. I have that book and really like your rendition.

Thanks! I got inspired at Stitches West '09. I saw several Wool Peddlers' Shawls while there. I really debated on using a solid for the lace section to show off the lace more, but I couldn't decide on a coordinating or complementary colour for it.

I really like the looks of the Wool Peddler Shawl. Simple, basic, clean. I also really like your idea of the variagated body and then a solid edge. That could be stunning with the right colour choices.

As far as using a shawl one's self? Well - I probably would (and have) at home; but I doubt I would in public. On the other hand - possibly a poncho or a ruana long enough to belt......

I am another one who does not particularly like varigated yarns but on the odd occassion I have been tempted by a beautiful skien, I have knit two rows alternating with another skien and that seemed to get rid of unwanted pooling. I do like the shwl though and I agree with MMario..........stay away from insatiable hand knitted wanters lol.

Nice shawl. The colorway worked out nice. I don't get "Grandma" even though I also knit whenever possible and like Earl Grey tea. Too, that may be the fact that if they tick me off, the naysayers know they won't get any knitted goodies! -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

Have you seen the Fountain Pen shawl? (Interweave Knits Spring 2009) I also have a thing for fountain pens, have many.. latest is my Namiki-Pilot Vanishing Point. LOVE IT!

Very nice! I'm working on the Kimono Shawl at the moment from the same book. I really like most of the shawls she has. I made one of the Prarie Shawls for my mom last year and she is already staking a claim on this one - mothers are insatiable. I think I'll put this on my que after the North Sea Shawl.
