Gloves

So, I've been experimenting with gloves for the first time. Overall, they're not as hard as I thought they might have been. The issue I'm having, though, is in the picking up of stitches to make the fingers. I always end up with holes, particularly near the base of the thumb on the palm-side of the glove. The pattern I've been using says to pick up 5 stitches, around the thumb hole, which I've been doing, but always end up with a hole somewhere. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks =)

PS- I've been using the "Intercostal Mitts" pattern on ravelry- http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/intercostal-mitts

I've heard people say they pick up extra stiches around the thumb and then decrease them out in the first round. Since I've only made one set of mittens, I haven't had a chance to try it.

I've made three pairs of gloves as Xmas gifts, but only after I made a practice glove out of waste yarn. Had the same issue with holes and did as mmario suggests: picked up two extra, one in each place I thought the gap between stitches was too big and then on the first round knitted 2tog to get rid of the extra I'd picked up.

I also tend to knit the tail and yarn together when I rejoin the yarn to the base of a finger or the thumb... this means I have less weaving in to do at the end of the project AND as it effectively doubles the thickness of the yarn for maybe 5 stitches or so... it tends to close up any looseness just around the 'picked up' sts.

Thank you so much! That's an excellent idea, and seemingly so obvious. Silly me =P I like that idea with the tail, Adrian, I might try that next time as well =)

I "unvented" thumb gussets on my mittens many years ago, later finding them listed in various books. The picking up of a couple of extra stitches to reinforce the joins and close the holes is also something I do with socks. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.
