I usually try to knit a pair of socks every month so many friends give me sock yarn. I only knit with one kind and, therefore, have a stash of nice soft yarn that I wouldn't use for socks. I thought of Elizabeth Zimmermann's "A Very Warm Hat", and develolped one with sock yarn. It is warm and comfortable. I knit one end and then picked up stitches to knit the other way. In total it weighs about 90 gm. Unfortunately, I have about 50 gm of each colour left and will have to knit another hat or look for some other project. Any hints?

Ron, this is an excellent idea. The bits and pieces leftover could just go into a grab bag version with a solid color for the inner lining. I will definitely have to keep this thought in mind. Thanks. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

I love the hat and the concept- especially appropriate for Maine weather, as you can imagine! As for your remnants, how about a hat in stranded or slip stitch knitting with a solid background of one color and a simple motif in successive bands of whatever colors are in your grab-bag?

Both ideas are great. I don't know why I hate throwing out yarn.

You hate throwing out yarn because it is un-natural, against the laws of nature and un-american, not to mention inhumane and contrary to the laws of gods and men. Plus it's bad, evil and makes any decent person shudder.

Yarn must be used or stashed. Always.

You're right. I just couldn't verbalize my feelings as well as you.

It also causes global...well, nevermind.

Cool hat. I love making hats and need to try that one. I've been combining my extra sock yarn with a worsted weight yarn to get a chunky or bulky guage and making some really cozy hats with interesting color effects.

Great idea!! Going to try that.

Am doing the same thing- great fun!

Hows about a pair of matching mitts?

(and yes, I said 'hows')

Oooo, I think that's a very good idea, so I do.

Thanks for the great idea. I always wanted to develop a pattern for lined mittens.
