Cable cast-on mistake

Oops. I just realized that I did the cable cast-on for my sweater incorrectly. Instead of going between the two stitches with the needle tip, I went through one only, just like knitting. I had used written instructions with vague illustrations, and now I saw a video which is much clearer. The cast-on looks fine, but I'm not sure it will function in the same way. I'm over 8" up from the bottom cuff, so no way am I starting over! Any thoughts?

I do it through one's fine.

Sounds like you did a knitted cast on instead of a cable cast on. The knitted cast on is my default cast on; I find that it looks good and is firm yet flexible enough for pretty much anything. I like the look of a cable cast on, but I find it a little less stretchy, and when knitting in the round it tends to spiral around the needles, making the initial join- in-the-round rather dicey.

Gee, I'm afraid the knitting police will want you to tear it all out and send them a notarized statement that you did so. There's also an minimum $150 fine. Oh, and you'll have to sit in Judge Judy's courtroom during one of her shrieking fits.

Really though, I don't think it should be a problem. After all the first stitch of the cable cast on is through the loop, not the space (since there isn't one to go through).

I'm with Albert on this one. It sounds like you knitted on instead of using the cable cast. Both look almost identical, but the knitting on method (to me) is smoother and doesn't look as bulky. I'd say you're fine...

Thanks, guys, for all of the reassurance and advice. I'm so glad I found this forum.

If your sweater isn't going to be worn every day, the knitted on cast on should work just fine. Cable cast on just helps provide a sturdier edge for something that will get a lot of wear and stress. While your lower edge may be a bit stretchier, it isn't any real drawback. Looking forward to seeing how the sweater turns out. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

I'm partial to long tail cast on, but I prefer knitted cast on (which you did) to cable cast on... No problem...go forth and knit, young man.
