I am just back last week from a fantastic vacation to Egypt - what an amazing trip. In the end, I decided not to try to bring knitting with me for several reasons ... I didn't want to deal with the potential hassles the airports, I wasn't sure what reaction the Egyptians might have to a man knitting, and finally other than on the international flight I didn't think there would be a lot of time for it. In the end, I did miss knitting a lot, but given how tightly packed the luggage ended up being (after too many souvenir purchases), I think it was the right decision.
The only fiber-related part of the trip I have to share was our visit to a "carpet school" not far outside of Cairo. In Egypt, it can be difficult to tell when you're just seeing a front for the salesroom and when you're seeing the real thing, but I can say that what we saw of the carpet-makers at work seemd like they were doing real work - although the workroom was significantly less busy just as we entered, so I think so some extent it's a show for the tourists.
