Having trouble finding yarn

Yes I am trying to start my first project making a blanket but so far I have not been able to find the yarn listed in the pattern. It is Bernat Softee Chunky Twist yarn Teal Twist is the color. I hvae been to the craft stores here and they do not have it. So I was wondering could I substitute another yarn for the one that I can not find. I am not like a lot of guys on here I do not live in a big city so I do not have a whole lot of places to go we only have two craft stores in my area. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Any Bernat Softee Chunky should work. The best thing to do is compare gauge of the yarn in the pattern with the yarn label of the yarn you would like to use. Take the pattern to your local craft store and compare it with the labels.

Hey Seth...actually the yarn called for in the pattern is a discontinued yarn, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find a substitute...there are a lot of similar alternatives in most craft stores.

Look for yarns in your craft store that are listed as "Bulky" or "Chunky" (not Super Bulky) or 12-ply (not such a common way of labeling yarns in the states). Check to see that the yarn calls for a US10.5 or US11 needle. Make sure it's as soft as you'd want a baby blanket to be. Make sure it has the color choices you'd want to use. And finally make sure it's machine washable (acrylic or acrylic blends).

Classic Chunky by Universal Yarns would be a good example:

Good luck...we'll be interested to hear what you come up with.

Jo-Ann's has some in stock that you can order online. http://www.joann.com/joann/home/home.jsp?topnavlink=true
Or, you can order directly from Bernat, http://bernat.com/.

Seth, if you are a member of Ravelry there are people who list what’s in their stash and they offer unused yarn for sale or trade. If you are not a member it’s free to join and a wonderful source of information (although I still prefer MWK for it’s camaraderie).

Also, Mary Maxim lists this yarn in this colorway as available here for $2.99/skein:
