Accepting Scholarship Nominations - Men's Spring Knitting Retreat 2011

Hey Guys,

We've already received our first nomination for a scholarship for one of the guys on here (written by one of own as well!).

Due to the generosity of a couple of anonymous donors and the results (so far) of the Men's Knitting Retreat auction, it looks like we'll be able to offer two full scholarships with a travel stipend.

I couldn't be more excited...while we may not make up the entire amount by the end of the auction, it's close enough where I can guarantee the two scholarships.

Calling For Nominations
This upcoming May, the Men's Spring Knitting Retreat will be held again in Upstate New York at Easton Mountain Retreat Center from Thursday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22, 2011.

We still have regular paid slots available and registration is available by calling Easton Mountain at 800-553-8235.

However, we are very excited to announce a two full scholarships to the Men's Spring Knitting Retreat, provided by the generosity of two of the guys who have participated in the past and by all the generous folks who have participated in the auction.

These scholarships include full retreat fees for a bed in a quad room, plus a stipend of $400 for travel expenses.

We want you to nominate any man you think should be able to go to the Men's Spring Knitting Retreat this coming May.

You can nominate a friend, a family member or yourself. The nominee must be a man and over 21 years of age. And please confirm that your guy has agreed to be entered into the nomination process and is available to attend. Two sample nominations would be:

I would like to nominate John O'Hara for the 2011 MSKR Scholarship. John is an Librarian in Northern Arkansas with a great love for reading and knitting. He is always teaching knitting to anyone interested and has taught his wife to knit and has begun to teach his children (who he thinks are too young yet to learn, but he still tries). He lives in a very rural state with no local yarn stores, so John helped start a knitting group at the library where he works and has also worked to increase the number of books on knitting kept within his library network (for which we are all very grateful). John would love to get together with other guys who have a love for knitting, crocheting and spinning and I think he would be an amazing addition to your group of guys.

I would like to nominate myself, John O'Hara, for the 2011 MSKR Scholarship. I have been knitting for 3 years and am completely hooked. As a professional who travels a lot, I take great pride in knitting in public and teaching coworkers how to knit. Unfortunately, since most of my work is done for non-profit organizations and I support a family of five, I have no funding, but would very much appreciate the opportunity of being around other guys that knit. I would appreciate your favorable review of my nomination.

Send nominations to me at Scholarship recipients will be selected from all the nominations by a panel of Men's Knitting Retreat coordinators (Michael Wade, Ted Myatt, Barry & myself). DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS January 28, 2011. The winner will be officially announced on February 4, 2011.ounced on February 4, 2011.

i'd like to nominate mr. will shuster from glee. i'm sure he would love to have a break from all those production numbers. i don't know if he knits, but he could just hang out without his shirt and sing and dance every now and then. maybe his friend kristin chenoweth would join him and they could do duets while we knit purl

we won't just get a cat, nubby nu nu, will manifest a kitten from our love...and lint from our hemp socks

we put birds on things

That's FUNNY! And a great idea, to boot!

Think less, enjoy it more.

Damn, would love to nominate myself, alas....

I have drafted and am submitting a nomination for someone I have known for years but am doing it via e-mail. I am new to the group and a modern day Luddite with new gadgets and the Internet so please forgive me if it takes a a little while to get it all figured out.

I simply felt obligated, after reading the post nominating Will Shuster, to inquire as to whether it is permissible for a member to nominate two people. If so please accept my nomination for Puck. I believe he knitting would provide an outlet for his occasional outbursts which led to his time in Juvenal detention (I believe that was a mistake as I prior to writing this note to possibly submit him for consideration I Googled and found he was wrongfully sentenced as he is not a minor!!!!!...(this I won't even touch but what a sigh of relief!), and if anyone from Glee is destined to parade around shirtless don't you think Puck might not be such a bad choice than Will?

Realizing that this sounds bad, I would still like to nominate myself for the chance to win the scholarship. In my experience as a lover of sweaters, I feel that men's sweaters, indeed, men's wear in general is an overlooked market. I've seen an emergence in men (heteros especially) to pay more attention to their appearance and dress over the last couple of years. However, it seems that what's being offered is often lacking. Many men's knits are often designed by women, who like to use flashy yarns or sleepy designs, and mostly you get Cosby sweaters or grandpa knits.
By attending this retreat I think I would not only learn great techniques and tips from other male knitters, but also learn what men would like to see in their clothing. And I feel confident a retreat like this would afford me the chance to learn these things and apply them to creating great designs for the Renaissance Man in an emerging market.

You sent this to Joe, right?

MMario - I'm not divorced from reality - we're having a trial separation

Thanks David (and Leo!)...I've copied the information you wrote here into our nominee list. If that wasn't what you intended, or you preferred to write something different as a formal nomination, just let me know by sending an e-mail to .

Will Schuester Needs To Know!

I seriously think that this groundswell of support (and desire) needs to be brought to Mr Schuester's attention. He is the kind of guy who would want to know - well at least about the support. He needs to bring nothing to the retreat. I believe that we are well able to create a beautifully fitted ensemble for him. So Joe send this off to him - that's an official dare! And let us know when we should prepare for his appearance.

It was incredibly thrilling that you all sent in a total of 15 nominations for the 2011 Men's Spring Knitting Retreat scholarship. And the caliber of guys nominated was quite impressive, so the competition was fierce.

2011 Scholarship Winners
The winners are:

Bill Jones (Bill on and BillJones on Ravelry) and Michael Wade (WonderMike to many of us).

Both of these guys have made an amazing contribution to the community of men who knit and will be a great addition to the group of guys already scheduled to attend. The decision was very difficult for all four would have been easy to pick two completely different winners given the great group of guys we had to choose from. I'm honestly sorry I couldn't have offered scholarships to all 15 guys.

Thanks to all who took the time to write nominations...I was glad to find out about a lot of these guys, many of who also have impressive contributions to the community and lurk a bit more under the surface.

I'm so excited...had to sit down!
I've wanted to go to a knitting retreat since they started...but was simply unable to...and to be able to spend time with Michael and the other gentlemen was beyond my hopes!

Glad to hear of the positive outcome Joe. I received the item I won in your raffle and I'm quite happy with it. Your hard work and personal sacrifices are quite commendable.
