Alright boys, I’m turning to you for advise. I’ve spent a lot of time on this and would be grateful for your time reading this and hopefully responding. I’m in the process of putting together a community fashion and art show for the Spring of ‘07. I’m giving myself just over a year so I can spend the next two months to finish writing the proposal, finding resources and materials, locating potential venues, talking with interested artist, crafters, and models, and taking classes. And a year to create outfits and art. I’m an advanced knitter, novice seamster and needle worker, and just learning crocheting. I also make buttons, beads, jewelry, and other accessories. So, I have thousands of questions ranging from fashion show management and development to helpful books or web sites on clothing construction to opinion about materials and patterns, and any comments or tips are greatly appreciated.
So, to give a brief overview and theme of the show, here’s what I have in mind; the focus being community art and fashion with an environmentally friendly twist. I want to use recycled, organic, and easily renewable materials as the main focus. Also having groups of people designing and producing garments and accessories. I’d like the show hall to be intimate but large enough to have an art gallery, tables for dining and viewing, and of course a stage and runway, all in the same space. The way I see the night of the show running is opening with the art gallery, showcasing paintings, sculptures, photography, tapestries, etc. while people mingle, then an elegant vegan dinner served right before the fashion show (featuring models of all shapes, sizes, ages, genders, colors, etc.), and ending with a Q and A. Sounds extensive and pricey, huh? But I think it’s very doable and I’m not concerned with price. Everyone I’ve spoken with is willing to volunteer their time and after ticket sales I’ll be able to reimburse most costs. Also, the artists can choose to sell there work. I am looking into fundraising for the cost of the space but other than that have my bases covered.
So, some of my question being:
Have any of you been involved with an art show and/or fashion show?
What resources (e.g. books, websites, videos, etc.) would you recommend for; sewing, clothing alteration, clothing construction, beading, wirework, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, etc.?
Are knitting machines worth it or a waste of time and money?
What materials and tools have you enjoyed using?
What kind of looks would you like to see on the runway? (e.g. freestyle blue and black quilted skirts)
Does this sound like something you would want to see?
Is anyone willing to participate? The show is in southern Arizona but artist everywhere are welcome.
Feel free to elaborate on any of these questions. Thanks for your time.
