Wow... I can't really believe I actually used that title. Anyway...
I haven't been knitting for that many years, but I have found that, through persistence, boredom, and just plain ol' obsession, I have greatly improved my skills as a knitter! Although I haven't been "able to cable" yet, I've tried my hand at lots of fun stuff! Designing, color work, super big knits, new stitch patterns, double knitting, socks!... I've done pretty much everything... except lace.
I would LOVE to do lace, but have a few concerns --
1) I am a selfish knitter. I like making stuff for me! In the beginning (after God created the heavens and the earth), I knitted for hours on end to make scarves for people that thought they came from a magic knit fairy. He he... Anywho, how can I incorporate lace-knitting into my personal life? I don't especially need a shawl or a stole for myself!
2) I don't really fancy the "fancy". While I will marvel at leaves and flowers and the likes, I have a much more contemporary taste. I LOVE looking at all the lace that you guys knit -- it just astounds me! BUT, is there a place for "modern" lace? I once saw a shawl that looked like a mountain scene... it was incredible! Little lace trees, little lace babbling brook, little lace forest fires... you know, typical stuff. But is there a pattern out there (for instance) like a lace Manhattan Skyline? That would be fantastic!
I have a ball of Malabrigo lace in lettuce just begging to be used! I originally bought it to make luxury socks for myself with, but couldn't find a lace pattern, and I doubt the durability.
All you guys make me so jealous with your lace making, and I want to have fun, too! Suggestions?
