Butternut Dyed Yarn

Thank you to MMario, Yarnguy716, and Tallguy for all of the information and tips on using butternut hulls to dye yarn. I, of course, couldn't wait on the wool I ordered to arrive to try this. Instead I had about 3/4 of a skein of Paton's Classic Wool Merino in Aran color laying around and decided to have a go with it. Here is the result. One picture is with a flash and one is without because both reflect the color of the yarn depending on the way you look at it. I LOVE it!

Also, I put what I did on my blog if you are interested. Here are the links.

Just beautiful!! My gosh it must feel so nice to have created it. That to me is part of the reward. I love the color. So warm.

Thanks...I really like the color too. As I've started to knit with it, I can see very subtle differences in the color. From a distance it looks like one solid color, but up close it has very subtle variations.

It was fun to see the yarn actually change color. I think up to that point I had my doubts it would work at all.

What's not fun is that I have two black thumbs even though I wore rubber gloves through the whole process. :D

Congrats! What a nice earthy color...and judging from your complexion...I bet it will look great on you. Perfect for autumn coming up. I wish I could wear autumnal colors. They make me look sort of sick...I guess my Mom was right years ago when she said I was a Winter colored person. Too bad because my favorite color pallate are autumn colors.

What are you planning on making out of it? Can't wait to see what you end up making!

Since this was a test without too much yardage, I've decided to put it together with a couple other left overs and make a cream, brown, and pink striped scarf.

When I get the wool I ordered to dye I want to make a scarf for me, but I haven't decided what pattern yet.

a beautiful colour. Wonder if you could get darker by using only the black/weathered hulls instead of having partially the green ones from the tree.

I think it would have been much darker if I had let it soak overnight. I only let it soak about 2 hours. It turned dark quick.

It turned out beautifully! I can't wait to see what you are going to knit with it.
