MWK 2009 Calendar

Darrel's picture

Calling all photogenic camera hams... Yes, you, with the shirtless profile pic! I'm talking to you!

We've joked about creating a MWK calendar over the last couple of years and, given that there are a few others on the scene, I think now is a good time to act on it! It's also going to be a charity project and we'll be donating most of the profits to a group or organization that we select as a group.

It's a easy project with wide appeal and there's great opportunity to help raise some money for a good cause. Now, given that this is for charity, we need to raise some big bucks! Here are some ideas on how to do that:
- find a printer willing to donate services in exchange for gratuitous advertising
- persuade local yarn stores to stock them
- create some ad units for print and online advertising
- outreach to knitting publications and podcasts to aid in promotion
- excellent photos of legitimate male knitters (no hotties who can't purl!)
- each of us commit to selling a certain number of calendars

The use of "hottie" was purely intended for comedic value, I assure you. You don't have to be beautiful, but you must be in an interesting, well-composed, knitting-themed photograph. Use your artist's eye... This could get on Oprah!

Everyone can help! Re-read that list above and think about what you can do to make this project a success. How can we raise $10,000?

If you're interested in being a MWK Calendar Guy or wish to help out with the planning and execution of what's sure to be a fun, meaningful project – raise your hand and say it!

Just for a ballpark number, I got a quote from printpelican.com for a 12x12 calendar, shrink-wrapped and on good paper... top quality... Here are the unit prices based on quantity:

$5.86 / 500
$3.92 / 1000
$2.66 / 2000
$1.68 / 5000
$1.44 / 10000

Now, those prices are slightly skewed because there's a 20% off calendar sale going on until Oct. 31.. a bit too soon, sadly. Orders over $5000 get a 21% volume discount, so that's something to think about, too.

Maybe getting printing services donated is a pipe dream, but those are pretty cheap unit prices and if we sold the calendars for $10, it wouldn't take long to hit the $10k mark!

CafePress' base price is $18.99, so we'd upcharge from there... It would take a lot more calendars to hit that $10k mark, but it's an option... I think people would be more inclined to buy a $10 calendar than a $20 calendar. I sure would be.

YarnGuy716's picture

Actually those are really good prices for quality print work. There is not a huge profit margin in the print industry right now. Most companies are undercutting each other to get the work, so I think it would be highly unlikely to find a printer willing to donate printing services and materials. A possible solution might be sponsorship or advertising space sold in the calender.

I could also lend some assistance with layout and design.

I think it's a great idea!

This sounds Great!

I will ask my uncle (my photographer) if he is interested and see what we can come up with. Mmmm. This sounds fun.

Just a thought....

Anyone with a good digital camara and photo skills going to MFKR? You could possibly get some good shots without complicating a lot of peoples lives, and should have plenty of knitting/fiber type props available.

Damn, if only my artist friend needed naked pics this year instead of last...I could have gotten some nice semi-clothed knitting pics.

Update: LOL, have to love the flood of PMs after this comment. The best part is that I called the guy up and said he can always use me in one of his projects again, so if I want to get in the calendar I can.....hmmm...off to the gym I go.

Count me in... If you want me.

Wonderful idea!

Being a wee bit on the shy side; I couldn't do the "pose".

Buck Strong's picture

Not being the least bit shy, you can use me in what ever way you want. Well.....there might be a few exceptions there.

I'll be happy to help in any way I can. I don't photogrpah well, so that might be out. Unless I can get a REALLY good photographer. But I'd be happy to provide a brief written bit about me and my knitting if you'd like.

kylewilliam's picture

are you coming to the men's knitting retreat in Nov.? - if so, I'll be more than happy to take a few photos of you... it's such a beautiful area... and I have been lucky before at getting a good picture...

we'll all have our cameras doing our best to photograph and get a good set of 12 pictures :)

Has anyone seen the movie "Calendar Girls" I think some not so serious and perhaps a bit fun photo's could be considered here :)

grandcarriage's picture

Yes...I think you should be photographed trying to hide your fuzzy bits behind a ballwinder or some other inadequately sufficient device. (ooo, did I say that outloud?)

Kerry's picture

What a great movie, I've seen it twice. Only the Brits could do it.

solomondre's picture

Sounds like fun!

I'm kind of off in the knitting desert out here; I could probably make a pretty decent picture for you but not much in the way of LYS sales. (That is, if you don't mind a hairy tattooed boy artfully draped in alpaca.)
Blogging might help get the word out, though, and I have quite a few knitting friends who might find a calendar of MWK super hot.

At the moment I'm finding knitting to be super hot in a different way. 32 deg C (91F) this week and 70%+ humidity in Puerto Vallarta; as soon as it cools down and is less humid, I can start the boyfriend sweater.

Cheers!

AndrewNiehus's picture

So....I took some pictures this weekend. Most are not good pics, and the ones that are good.....show way more than anyone needs to see. I think I am going to have to try this again.

You better send my those pics so they don't end up in the wrong hands! ;-)

I suspect photos are like knitting and music recordings and other stuff that tends to get "personal" - YOU see every flaw, but others do not.

OK, I have a few pics. Now what do I do with them. Email them to Darrel? I actually think some of em are pretty good! And I usually don't think I'm very photogenic? I just don't know if I want to be Mr. August, or Mr. December? :-)

I created a new category for image uploads called "Calendar." Feel free to upload some images in to that category if you'd like some community feedback.

I've gotten some and honestly, most just aren't good enough. No more shots where I can see your pubes, please! Pay attention to the backgrounds of your photos... this is for a calendar. A big, glossy, calendar that people will pay good money for in a crap economy.

As I said in the original message, the bar really does have to be high or this just isn't going to work. If you don't know a photographer, try posting on your local craigslist looking for a student who can help you out. There are lots of budding photographers out there who can help!

Dec 1 is the deadline!

i know there's a few guys on here i'd love to see lying on a bed and scantily clad in nothing more than yarn hanks balls and skeins
