The Knitting Zone : Fact or Fiction?

So a very odd thing happened the other day; I was able to knit up an entire skein of yarn into half a scarf without ever actively thinking about what I was doing. In fact, I was practically able to balance my checkbook while my needles clicked away. Here's the whole story:

Has this ever happened to you? Let me know, and thanks for your comments.

Isn't that scary? I thought it was bad when it happened while I was driving... arriving at my destination with virtually no memory of the drive there... but with my knitting? THAT is dangerous! Especially when doing a lace pattern repeat!!

When that happens while I am driving I tend to take it as a sign I need a "mental health" day. (One of the spots I go through is a double s-curve with an associated steep dip into a glen and back up the other side - very hard to miss going through that!)

But yes, I get into the "zone" - even while knitting lace. QWhich is why the things I design tend to have short repeats on long rows.

On a basic garter or stockinette pattern, it is totally possible. I have even "zoned" on a basket stitch...
can be a beautiful zen thing -- or, like when I was knitting a hat and "zoned" on my decreases -- a terrifying thing!

I think it's one of the things I love about knitting.

There is a totally meditative element to it.

Keep "zoning" -- when appropriate!

Very much fact!

Try doing something like a simple pattern, a nice single cable all the way up the scarf...or try doing something in the round with a nice Fair Isle pattern.

You'd be amazed at how fast it works up, and you'll be sitting there scratching your head trying to figure out "how did I get THAT much done?"

While I think a lot and have a whole mind conversations with myself while knitting I never zone out. Guess the patterns I knit require too much mental attention ... at least for me.

Cognative thought is highly over rated, I try to stay in the zone as much as possible.
