Every time I head out of town, I try to hit a LYS that I have never been to. Recently, I accompanied my cousin to the Wisconsin Dells (summer vacation destination & the water park capital of the world) in the dead of Winter. Absolutely NOTHING to do but knit... and take a quick ride over to Baraboo, WI where I hit Miss Vicky's Yarn Cottage. Cute little place... in a very small, quaint, two bedroom home.

She had some nice stuff on hand... not huge amount of inventory... but it is a small place in Baraboo, WI after all! After letting some of the locals get over their initial shock that a MAN was in their yarn shop and that he was actually a knitter and could talk shop with the most seasoned of them... I set about scouring the shelves for yarn. Honestly, not much was speaking to me but I kept going back to this beautiful 100% superwash wool from "fibranatura" called YUMMY, Colorway 41358. It doesn't have a name but for me it reminded me of the warmth and majesty that is the mountains of New Mexico... The rich blue of the skies... the gold and chocolate of the land and architecture! And given how horrid this Winter has been, I needed the tangible reminder of life outside the tundra.

I have absolutely no clue what I am going to do with this yarn. I got 5 hanks at 370 yds each (1850 yds total). It's like a DK weight...pretty light... and I would really like to venture into a fitted garment for myself. Perhaps a nice, lightweight vest for Spring?

I just got the book "Knit 1 Below" by Elise Duvekot and it has lots of examples of garments knit with variegated yarns with great effect. The color changes end up moving vertically instead of horizontally. Some are knit with one variegated and a solid and others are done with two variegated yarns. This yarn is gorgeous and you might find some inspiration in some of the designs in that book. Just a thought.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I will look for it!

Beautiousness in the extreme! That blue against the brown is stunning. That brown has the richness of my favorite - dark chocolate. Yes, my name is John and I'm a yarn addict! I have no idea what to make with it but whatever it is will be gorgeous, I'm sure. Solid black sweater or vest with vertically running diamonds in this yarn? Entrelac afghan or scarf?

Beautiful! Can't wait to see it knitted.

Thor, my man - I gotta say...Looking at these two posts (icelandic yarn and now this) have left me drooling. Not a good thing, since I use public computers at our libraries. (Drool/computer keyboard - not a safe combination.) Anyhow, great finds and I can hardly wait to see what these beauties become. Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.
